The newest trend in partying without consequence is the next day hangover IV. Seen on a ton of reality shows from Vanderpump Rules to Real Housewives & Jersey Shore it's the next big trend.
But, how does an IV solve your hangover? What's in the IV? Let's break down everything you need to know about the hangover IV once and for all.
It's proven that IV fluids for hangover work wonders. They kick your hangover to the curb faster than any breakfast burrito or hair of the dog shot ever could. But, how do they work? Well, to answer that you first need to understand what a hangover is.
We all know how it feels but what is causing this awful feeling internally? What effect does alcohol have on the body to cause these symptoms the morning after?
IV therapy for hangover works for many reasons. First, you need to understand what a hangover is.
The symptoms of hangover appear after a night (or day) of heavy drinking. Why? Hangover symptoms show up when your blood alcohol level drops in a significant way. One or two glasses of wine are not going to raise your blood alcohol levels super high. This is more common when you have been drinking a lot.
Your blood alcohol level (BAC) needs to be about .1 or higher to trigger a hangover. In men, this takes 5-6 drinks. In women, this can happen with 3-4 drinks. This BAC will take around 10-12 hours for your blood alcohol level to get back to zero which is quite a long ride. The symptoms of a hangover seem to be the result of acetaldehyde build up in your body.
When you drink, the alcohol (ethanol) produces acetaldehyde. Your liver processes acetaldehyde and you avoid a hangover when you only have a little to drink. But, when you are drinking a lot, drinking fast, or mixing alcohol, your liver falls behind. It's this excess buildup that causes the unpleasant symptoms once your BAC comes down.
Dehydration is also a common side effect of excessive alcohol consumption. Dehydration causes headache and nausea. Alcohol pulls vitamin B from your body as it courses through your system. You lose magnesium and zinc stores as your body fights against the alcohol.
At the end of the day, drinking alcohol is drinking poison. It's a fun poison and helps you be a better dancer but it isn't great for your health. This is where our IV therapy combinations come in.
The latest trend, as mentioned, is curing your hangover with IV fluids. So, what's in the IV fluids hangover cure? That depends on who is giving you the IV.
Our AZ IV Medics Myers' Cocktail Therapy Bag treats all major hangover symptoms. It includes all the ingredients to tackle the underlying causes of your hangover. The ingredients include:
Saline is effective at treating severe dehydration. This is the base of all our IV cures. Dehydration is the underlying cause of many different conditions. In the case of hangover, this will get rid of that pounding headache.
Alcohol has the troubling side effect of leaching vitamin Bs from your body. Lack of vitamin B1 can result in your body being unable to metabolize glucose for energy! We use a combo approach of B Complex and B12 to restore your vitamin B levels and give you a boost.
This endogenous antioxidant is a major player in getting rid of the alcohol in the body. The stores in your body deplete on a night of heavy drinking. We replenish these stores and give you some extra to make you feel better fast. Glutathione is also very effective in allowing your body to metabolize the acetaldehyde.
Vitamin C supports the work of the glutathione and supports its lifespan. It prevents your body from eliminating the antioxidants and keeps them in your system longer.
The enzymes in your body that break down alcohol are dependent on zinc to work. Again, we want to give those enzymes enough of what they need to get the job done fast.
Depleted through excessive urination on a night of heavy drinking, magnesium is responsible for sleep regulation and energy-boosting. Magnesium also relieves head and neck tension, muscle cramps, and helps you relax.
We also offer the Medications Toradol/Ketorolac a NSAID Pain medication & Zofran/Ondansetron a nausea medication. The combo of these 2 medications is extremely helpful in alleviating the symptoms of Headache and Nausea.
