March welcomes the first day of spring and also spring allergies for a large portion of the U.S. population. More than 50 million people in the United States experience various types of allergies each year.

To help you stay prepared for common seasonal allergies this spring in Arizona, AZ IV Medics has compiled a list of some of the most common springtime allergies in the Phoenix area, their signs and how you can relieve symptoms.

Allergens Activated in the Spring in the Arizona Region

In Arizona, the spring months mean weed season, tree pollination and grass pollination. The spike in pollen during this time causes an increase in allergies for Arizona residents. Common allergies to look out for throughout Phoenix include:

  • Ash: Common ash allergy symptoms are sinus pain, watery eyes, runny nose, breathing issues, headaches, sneezing and itching.
  • Bermudagrass: Runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing are common symptoms of bermudagrass allergies.
  • Mulberry: Reactions to this highly-allergenic, pollen-producing deciduous tree include coughing, sneezing, fatigue, runny nose, nasal congestion, asthma and conjunctivitis.
  • Mesquite: Mesquite allergies can cause symptoms like asthma, nasal inflammation, conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, scratchy throat, sneezing and contact dermatitis.
  • Ragweed: Contact with pollen produced by this perennial weed can cause wheezing, coughing, itchy throat, itchy ears, runny nose, sneezing, hives and other rashes and swollen eyelids.

How to Relieve Allergy Symptoms

To find some relief from your spring allergy symptoms, try:

  • Using an over-the-counter allergy medicine: Antihistamines such as Zyrtec and Claritin are great at blocking histamines, which cause sneezing and other allergy symptoms. They’re also less likely to make you sleepy than other antihistamines.
  • Cleaning out your eyes with eye drops: Eyedrops such as Pataday, Optivar and Patanol require a doctor’s prescription but can help soothe itchy, watery eyes that come with allergies.
  • Relieving nasal congestion with decongestants: Decongestant nasal sprays are another option. However, you shouldn’t use them for longer than three days because overuse can constrict the nose’s blood vessels.
  • Considering a prescription nasal spray: While prescription steroid nasal sprays like Nasonex and Flonase reduce swelling in the nose, antihistamine nasal sprays block histamine. Astelin, Patanase and Astepro are FDA-approved nasal sprays that may offer some relief.
  • Turning on the air conditioning and closing your windows: You can use air conditioning in places like your home or car to help alleviate allergy symptoms. Closing your windows will also help to keep the allergens out.
  • Getting allergy shots: Allergy immunotherapy, or allergy shots, are a great option to try if nothing else is working. Allergy shots can reduce the need for medication and lessen the risk of severe asthma attacks when individuals are exposed to allergens.
  • Investing in IV therapy: At AZ IV Medics, our Myer’s Cocktail IV will help alleviate allergy symptoms by boosting your energy and immune system naturally. It also contains all six of our vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including vitamin B complex, vitamin B12, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and glutathione. IV infusions flush out toxins and can streamline the process of recovery.

There are also several home remedies to relieve pollen-related allergy symptoms. You can try vacuuming regularly with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter, running a dehumidifier or drying clothes in a dryer rather than on a clothesline. Using herbs and extracts such as spirulina may also offer some relief, but remember to consult your doctor first.
